About RipX
What does RipX do?
RipX is a CD ripping service. This is useful in that popular music player devices such as the Apple Computer's iPod can now hold all of your music. What you need is a way to get all of those CDs you own in to your iPod, and that's what RipX does for you. You send us your CDs and we process them with a CD loading robot. If you've got a fair number of CDs and you've ever tried loading them one by one into your computer yourself, you already know why you need RipX.

How much does it cost?
Short answer, about $0.75 per CD. That's just 75 cents per CD from 50 to 1000 CDs. Click "Order" on the menu bar at the top of this page for more info. All pricing includes free shipping and insurance for all three shipping legs of your order; boxes to to you, shipping to us, shipping back to you. We also include free DVDs containing your data. And, we will rip your CDs for 75 cents at any bit rate unlike some of our competitors who charge more for higher quality encoders or bit rates. Shop around, we think you will agree that our prices are the lowest with comparable value in shipping and insurance, and if you find something lower, let us know and we will beat it!.

RipX has the lowest prices, but how's your service?
Great! With RipX, you get quality trackable shipping and insurance with every order. We don't play games with "Packages" to entice you to pay more. With every order you get quality inkjet labled DVDs with your data. Every song is tagged with ID3 information; track, artist, album, etc. You also pay the same low 75 cents per CD price regardless of which encoder or bitrate you choose. We don't charge you more because you want your music in a higher quality format such as AAC. Every order comes with a custom color printed letter welcoming you to our service and giving you plenty of instructions, and there is also a custom letter in the box when you recieve your completed order. And, in addition we send you plenty of emails when you place your order, shipping and tracking information, when we recieve your order, when it's finished processing, and when it goes back to you. To top it all off, RipX offers more encocoder options and methods by which to return your data to you than any other CD ripping vendor. We offer rental hard drives, a hard drive you send us, DVDs, or we will even sell you a drive. Got something else in mind that holds data? Or even a bare hard drive? No problem, we will support that as well.

We pride ourselves on great service, and if you need technical help, we are there for you as well. RipX is changing the game in the CD ripping industry. We run a lean service oriented business, so we can offer our service at a price lower than any competitor.

How does your pricing compare to buying music online?
Quite favorably. Buying music online costs about 15 times more than using RipX to extract your music from your CDs. Each song you purchase online will set you back about $1, whereas with RipX, each CD is processed for 75 cents. Generally there are about 10 songs per CD, so you are getting about 10 songs for 75 cents from each of your own CDs, vs. that one song per $1 online. It just makes sense for you to invest the extra 75 cents per CD to get the music you already own ripped and compressed by RipX. Then, if you so desire, you can start to enjoy the convenience of purchasing music online and build your music collection in to the future.

About Ordering
Does RipX offer discounts for large quantity orders?
Yes, if you don't see the quantity you like on the order page, just use the Custom Number field. If the order is really large, an email form will popup where you can give us the details of your order. We'll review large orders and get back to you with a competitive quote.

Does RipX have a minimum quantity order?
Yes, normally we only rip collections of 50 CDs or larger. If you really want us to rip your smaller than 50 CD collection, we'll be happy to do so, just fill in the Custom Number field on the order page, and we'll send you a quote.

How long will it take to process my order?
That depends on the size of your collection and the number of other customers we are currently processing, etc. It also depends on how far you live from our offices, as that will determine the shipping time. Generally it takes about five to seven business days for all of the shipping and processing. Once we have your CDs, it typically takes only one day to process your CDs, so most of the time for the order is spent in shipping.

Why might I want to order a hard drive?
Several reasons. When you order, our ordering engine takes into account the number of CDs in your collection and what type of encoding you have selected. Generally, a CD collection greater than 500 CDs will require the use of a hard drive because it's large enough that using DVD discs to return your data is no longer feasible. You also might want to consider your computer and how much free disk space your currently have. Especially if you use your computer for editing video which can take up quite a bit of hard disk space. If your computer does not have more hard disk space free than the approximate size of your order as indicated on our order page, then you will need to purchase a hard drive. Also, you may prefer to move your collection between multiple computers using the external hard drive you purchase from us, which might apply to you if you have a vacation home, etc. Lastly, using a hard drive is much easier than using DVDs. Instead of having to load multiple DVDs, all of your music is in one place on the hard drive, so if convenience is your goal, then purchasing an external hard drive from us is the way to go.

What size hard drive do I need?
Our order engine recommends the correct minimum drive sizes for your order. If you prefer, you may select a larger drive size so you will have some more space to grow your collection in the future.

What if I want to send in less than 50 CDs?
That's fine, fill out the Custom Number field and we'll send you a quote.

What if I want a custom order?
That's fine too. We can do very large orders for you if needed. If you don't see what you are looking for, let us know and we may be able to accommodate your needs. It does not hurt to send us an email so we can evaluate how we might help you out.

What is your return policy?
There are no returns on the ripping process since it is an intangible service. If DVDs or a Hard Drive that we send you is defective, you may return those items within 30 days and we can replace them if we find them to be unreadable. If the problem is with your computer, we won't be able to process your return. RipX aims for 100% customer satisfaction. If you are not happy, let us know why and we'll work to rectify the problem.

About Shipping
How much does it cost?
Shipping and insurance for your CDs is included is free with every order, and that includes all three shipping legs; packing materials to you, your CDs back to us, and then your CDs and processed digital data back to you. After you place an order, the shipping materials you receive will contain a pre-paid return label. Each of your CDs is insured for $10 worth of loss or damage insurance. Please note that if your shipment is damaged for any reason, you must keep all packing materials and notify us right away so we can file a claim with our shipping agent.

How does the shipping process work?
After you place an order and your credit card is authorized, we will ship a carton and CD "cakebox" spindles to you. The spindles are similar to what you get when you buy blank CD-Rs in bulk packs. You then take your CDs out of their Jewel Cases and load them on to the spindles and pack them in the provided carton. There will also be a pre-paid return label in the carton. Apply the label to the outside of the box and then drop off your CDs at any UPS location or call the 800 number for pickup. Once we receive your CDs, we will load your CDs into our equipment, rip and encode all of your music information, and then copy the converted files to either DVDs or a Hard Drive depending on what you ordered. Lastly, we repack your CDs and newly converted digital music collection and ship everything back to you. It's a pain free process that will save you lots of time and get your listening to your music in short order.

Do I get my CDs back?
Yes, your CDs are your "Copyrighted Masters" of your music collection. You retain your CD collection, and you get a new digital copy of your collection for use in today's digital players. Most customers will then store their CDs as archival masters in a safe place where they are free from temperature extremes, corrosion, etc.

Do I send CDs in their Jewel Cases?
No, we prefer that you load your CDs on to the provided spindles. There are two major reasons for this policy. Foremost, Jewel Cases are actually quite heavy and bulky when you've got a lot of them in one place. Each Jewel Case weighs more than the CD it holds. Therefore, we would have to increase the cost of our service by quite a bit to accommodate the extra shipping weight and size. Also, taking CDs out of their cases one by one is quite time consuming and would delay your order. If you really don't want to deal with your Jewel Cases, then fill out our Custom Order Inquiry Form and we will be happy to send you a quote for the increased shipping and handling of your CDs in their Jewel Cases.

Do you allow international orders?
Usually no, due to increased shipping costs. However, if you fill out a Custom Order Inquiry Form, we can evaluate your location and send you a quote based on international shipping rates. Also note that due to customs and international shipping policies, processing time may be much longer than domestic service. Consider using a freight forwarder with a United States mailing address.

Are my CDs shipped with insurance?
Yes, every CD is insured for $10 both directions.

Do you accept Drop Off Orders?
Yes. If you are located near our facility you may drop off your order at:
RipX, LLC
2522 N. Proctor St. #362
Tacoma, WA 98406-5338

About Encoding Options
What audio file formats does RipX offer?
RipX offers, MP3, AAC (MP4), Apple Lossless and WAV. Note that WAV files do not support tagging and require a very large hard drive purchase to accommodate most collections. WAV is not suitable for most applications using typical music jukebox software and/ or portable music players.

What is your default encoding option?
MP3 192 kbps CBR as this guarantees the widest compatibility amongst jukebox software and portable players. If you use Apple's iTunes® as your jukebox software, you may prefer to select AAC.

What about FLAC or OGG encoding?
RipX currently supports only the above formats. That may change if there is significant demand for another format.

Does RipX support CBR or VBR?
Both. Default is CBR, but let us know if you prefer VBR and we can accommodate your order.

Does RipX support any Lossless encoding?
Yes, Apple Lossless. This is top quality, but requires more space. Excellent if you don't plan to use a portable player or you have a smaller CD collection.

How does RipX handle scratched or damaged CDs?
RipX uses high quality CD readers which can handle most minor scratches and defects present on a typical CD. We will also make an attempt to re-read any CD that comes up as unreadable, but we make no guarantees for deeply scratched, damaged or otherwise unreadable CDs. We will return any unreadable CDs to you and mark them as unreadable. If your collection has been somewhat abused or you have many dirty or damaged CDs, please take the time to clean them up a bit before shipping or your order may be delayed.

Will my library be copy protected?
Yes, CD music is always copy protected by copyright. You only have the right to make a digital copy of your collection for your own personal use. RipX does not store or keep any copies of your CD music. RipX expects customers to adhere to all copyright laws and to respect the artists and recording companies right to be fairly compensated for their products. Please do not upload your music to any file sharing service as doing so is a violation of RipX Terms and Conditions and in so doing, you release RipX, LLC of any liability for your actions.

About Your Converted Music
How do I load the converted music into my computer?
You can see our support guides for more information. In short:
1. Insert the DVDs or connect the Hard Drive you obtained from RipX and drag and drop the files to your hard drive.
2. Import the files from your hard drive to your music jukebox software.

How do I load the converted music into my iPod or other handheld player?
You can see our support guides for more information. In short:
1. Insert the DVDs or connect the Hard Drive you obtained from RipX and drag and drop the files to your hard drive.
2. Import the files from your hard drive to your music jukebox software.
3. Sync your iPod or other handheld player to your music management/ jukebox software.

How are the converted files organized?
Your music will be organized as a hierarchy of folders containing artists, then albums and then songs.

Will my files be tagged with Artist, Album, Song, Genre, etc.?
Yes, every track will be tagged with an ID3 tag containing Artist, Album, Song, Genre, etc. Please note that some albums or artists are local or obscure artists that have not been catalogued in any public CD database. Do not expect that your local garage band's CD will be properly tagged. However, the music from any CD will be ripped and compressed and you can always go back and tag any unknown files using your music management software.

Will my converted music be CD quality?
Yes. Music compression algorithms have become quite popular. Some are better than others, but almost all agree that the resulting audio is of excellent quality. You can select higher quality options when you order, if you prefer. Keep in mind that your audio equipment and listening environment are huge factors in determining the actual real time quality of your encoded music. If you prefer an audiophile like setting with a very high end amplification system and a properly equalized quiet room, then you will want to select a Lossless or very high quality compression format for your music. If on the other hand, you use a portable player and do most of your music listening in a noisy environment such as while commuting in your automobile, you won't notice any extra benefit from higher quality compression options and your files will take up more space, leaving you with less songs that will fit on your portable player. Generally, unless you have an extremely sensitive ear, our default options will provide you with excellent sound quality that you will enjoy.

About Other Stuff
Does RipX keep a copy of my music?
No. Your music is copyright material which you own. RipX only provides the service of ripping and compressing your music collection for you. When we are finished processing all data and original CDs are returned to you and removed from our servers.

Does my Computer read DVDs?
That's a good question. Try it out. Insert a DVD that you might normally play in your den in your DVD player and see what happens. If your computer recognizes the DVD movie and plays the movie, then your computer can read the DVDs that RipX will send to you on completion of your order. Most computers purchased in the last three to five years will be able to read DVDs. If in doubt, then select a Hard Drive when purchasing. Note that a hard drive also requires a USB 2.0 port on your computer. If your computer is very old, you may not have the hard disk space, proper USB port, or DVD player necessary to import your music. It's your responsibility to make sure that your computer can handle these requirements before you order. Please see our support page for more info.

How many CDs worth of converted music fit on a DVD?
Generally 50 to 60 music CDs will fit on a DVD. Note that this is very dependent on the amount of music on each CD and the encoding options that you select. Our order engine will let you know if your order is too big to fit on a reasonable number of DVDs.

Does RipX use ID3 tags?
Yes, every track will be tagged with an ID3 tag containing Artist, Album, Song, Genre, etc.

Does RipX offer a LP Phonograph conversion service?
No not at this time. LPs do not have the tracking information contained on a CD, hence each track would have to be manually partitioned from a full album which is an extremely time consuming and therefore expensive human process. You might want to check out CD Spin Doctor http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/spindoctor/overview.html from Roxio Software if you'd like to digitize your LP collection.

Does RipX offer a DVD conversion service?
No, not at this time. Generally, DVDs have much greater protection schemes and require much more disk space to process. Even though they are shaped similar to CDs, they are very different from a technical standpoint and the creation of a service around them is much more difficult.

Does RipX offer a VHS conversion service?
No, like LPs, VHS tapes contain no track information, so digitization can be difficult.

Does RipX offer a Photo or Negative digitization service?
No, not at this time.
